Mt. Biking: Canal Du Midi – France Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: wet/cloudy/sunny/wet/thundery !!! Max Speed: Distance Covered:
After a disappointing couple of days of poor weather where we hope to canoe
down the Gorges Du Tarn but could,nt find any canoe hire open !!! in fact
we stayed in a campsite right on the banks of the river but could’nt find
anyone to pay !!! As I said earlier France is shut !!!
We end up down a track for a night in the rain at Lac Raviege so with rain
still falling in the morning we head south to the Canal du Midi in search
of better weather !!!
As soon as we cross the Montagne Noire by Mazamet the rain stopped ,the sun
come out and the country took on a Mediteranean feel with olives, vines and
fruit trees :) We stopped on a mountain road to pick cherries and found the
most wonderful waterfalland went for a paddle – the cherries were good
too :)
We then found our lovelly spot from last year right on the banks of the
canal near Puichericand had lunch. Then at 2 o clock we set off on our bikes
along the tow path to the castle at Carcassonne approx. 20 miles !!!!
The ride was fantastic passing several locks and Trebes was good and we
stopped at the tourist information for map to discover we were only 2/3 rds
there after 2 hours !!!! On arriving at Carcasssonne and seeing the castle
in the distance for the first time our troubles started :( We had to leave
the tow path cross a busy road and head across the city to the castle,I
went first and lost Mag straight away as she could’nt get across the busy
road :( What a nightmare !!!
So after riding around this housing estate, sit at roundabout eating
cherries and waiting by the canal there was still no sign of Mag !!!So I
decide to head to the castle and hope she is there ???
Luckily there is only on entrance and Mag was there waiting,to say I was
relived is an understatement !!!!
We are too late to walk around the walls but had a look round the old
town, abit Disney and full of tacky trinket shops :( but we had coffee and
cake to set us up for the two and a half hour trip back !!!
We have a quick Redbull stop in Trebes and make it back to the van before
dark and the thunder and lightning storm start !!!! So even if it did rain
on alot of the way we had a brilliant time and it’s the furthest we have
ever cycled it made up a little for missing out on the canoeing yesterday
– perhaps we can fit it in on the way home ???
